Ski resorts in Akureyri and Siglufjörður gear up for Easter activities
Despite a challenging winter season with unusually low snowfall, ski resorts in North Iceland are preparing to welcome visitors with open slopes and festive activities over the Easter holiday.
In Hlíðarfjall, Akureyri, recent snowfall has improved conditions considerably, offering a much-needed boost ahead of the busy Easter weekend. Brynjar Helgi Ásgeirsson, director of the Hlíðarfjall ski resort, says the resort is ready for an action-packed schedule.
"There has been a heatwave for the past two weeks, which made conditions difficult, but we’ve now received fresh snow, and it’s made a big difference," Ásgeirsson told mbl.is . "We’re excited to be open all Easter."
The resort will be open:
- Epiphany, Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Easter Monday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Events include an Easter egg hunt, live DJs, and music performances, with a highlight performance by Aron Can on Saturday.
Ásgeirsson noted that snow levels this year are among the lowest in two decades. Still, he encouraged everyone to make the most of the current conditions. “The upper and lower areas are in good shape — come hit the mountain!”

Skarðsdalur in Siglufjörður is also open
Further north, Skarðsdalur ski area in Siglufjörður will also be open throughout Easter. Regional manager Birgir Egilsson confirmed that despite limited snow, they’ve managed to prepare two lifts by manually shoveling snow over the coming days.
Skarðsdalur will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Friday through Monday.
"There’s no special program here this year — just good skiing," Egilsson said, adding with a smile, “We encourage everyone to come and enjoy.”
