Mountain roads impassable across Iceland as winter weather hits

Severe weather conditions have rendered many of Iceland’s mountain roads impassable, disrupting travel plans and prompting caution across the country. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a yellow weather alert for the North and Westfjords, citing poor visibility and difficult driving conditions.

Travelers are advised to check the latest road conditions on the Icelandic Road Administration’s website, umferdin.is, before heading out.

Westfjords:

  • Dynjandisheiði and Klettsháls are currently impassable.
  • Many other routes are covered with ice, icy patches, or snow.
  • Notable icy areas include Bröttubrekka and Fróðárheiði.

North Iceland:

  • Höfðahverfi and Víkurskarð are impassable.
  • Heavy traffic reported in Almenningur.
  • Frost is present in Fljót, Ólafsfjarðarvegur, and Svalbarðsströnd, with icy or snow-covered conditions elsewhere.

Northeast Iceland:

  • Hófaskarð is impassable.
  • Frost affects Möðrudalsöræfi and Raufarhafnarvegur Road.
  • Most routes in the area are snow-covered or icy.

East Iceland:

  • Heavy traffic reported in Fagridalur and Heiðarendi.
  • Frost on Skriðdalsvegur, Hróarstunguvegur, and Lagarfossvegur.
  • Snow on Fjarðarheiði, and ice/icy patches on many other roads.
  • Öxi is currently impassable.

Motorists are urged to travel with caution and stay updated as conditions can change rapidly.
