Gunman arrested during Grindavík evacuation
A man who brandished a firearm at two rescue workers during the evacuation of Grindavík this morning was arrested at the scene, according to senior police officer Gunnar Schram of the Suðurnes Police.
“The suspect was taken into custody, and we are currently investigating the case. The individuals involved have received appropriate support,” Schram told mbl.is from the coordination center in Reykjanesbær.
Rescue workers threatened during evacuation
The confrontation occurred as the two rescue workers prepared to assist with evacuations in the volcanic hazard zone. Special forces were dispatched to the scene, and the affected responders later received assistance from the Red Cross.
According to mbl.is, the man has since been released from custody, though further details on the investigation remain undisclosed.
Response efforts ongoing in Grindavík
Schram noted that 20-25 responders are currently stationed in Grindavík, working primarily on eruption-related operations. This figure does not include contractors involved in reinforcing protective barriers and maintaining essential infrastructure.
Decreasing public interest
Unlike previous eruptions, public interest in the latest volcanic activity has declined, partly due to limited visibility from key vantage points.
“This eruption is not clearly visible from Reykjanesbraut, so the attraction is different from the last event, where everything was in plain sight,” Schram explained.

Highly trained response teams
Despite the frequency of volcanic activity, emergency responders have become well-trained and efficient in handling evacuations and securing hazardous areas.
“The first steps always involve evacuation procedures and road closures around Grindavík. The teams working on these operations have gained extensive experience and are well-prepared for the challenges that arise,” Schram concluded.
