The Icelandic Red Cross has launched the 3dagar.is campaign (3 days campaign) to encourage citizens to be better prepared for emergencies.

Be ready to survive without assistance

Emergencies can happen suddenly and without warning, whether due to natural disasters, power outages, or other crises. According to Aðalheiður Jónsdóttir, the Red Cross's team leader for emergency preparedness, it is essential that people can take care of themselves for a few days without outside help.

The 3 days initiative encourages every household to be ready to manage without electricity, water, internet, or phone service for at least three days.

Create a household plan and emergency kit

To prepare, every household should have an emergency plan and a fully stocked emergency kit containing essential supplies for survival.

Recommended items include:

Radio (battery-powered or hand-crank)
Extra batteries
Candles & matches/lighter
Portable stove (Prímus) or gas grill
Flashlight
Duct tape & multipurpose tools
List of emergency phone numbers
First aid kit

Additionally, households should store enough food and water for each family member—including pets—for three days.

Prepare now, not later

Since disasters can strike at any time, the Red Cross urges everyone to assemble their emergency kit immediately. Being prepared can make all the difference in ensuring safety and resilience during a crisis.
