A tragic accident occurred today on Iceland’s Ring Road near the Eyjafjöll mountains when falling rocks struck a vehicle carrying three foreign women. The driver did not survive.

According to South Iceland Police, the incident was reported at 12:42 PM. A large rock hit the eastbound car, fatally injuring the driver. Emergency responders arrived to find the driver trapped inside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two passengers escaped with minor injuries and were transported to a medical facility for further evaluation.

An investigation is underway, led by the South Iceland Police Investigations Department with support from the Capital Region Police Technical Unit.

Authorities temporarily closed the road following the accident, but it was reopened later in the afternoon.
