Police are maintaining a high level of discretion in an ongoing homicide investigation, citing investigative interests. The case is considered highly unusual, not only due to the homicide itself but also because it involves deprivation of liberty and extortion—a rare combination in Icelandic legal history. Additionally, the number of individuals arrested and remanded in custody is remarkable.

The case centers around a man in his sixties, who died in the hospital after being found in critical condition in Gufunes.

Currently, six individuals remain in custody, and Chief Inspector Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson of the South Iceland Police, who is leading the investigation, has declined to comment on whether further arrests are expected.

Three serious offenses under investigation

"Deprivation of liberty is a serious offense on its own, extortion is a serious crime, and then there is the homicide we are investigating. Multiple parties are involved, which means there is a vast amount of evidence to examine," Þórhallsson stated.

He highlighted the evolving nature of police investigations, noting that modern technology plays a significant role in gathering evidence.

"Our society is changing—we now have video recordings from homes, vehicles, and mobile phones. Reviewing this material is time-consuming, but crucial in piecing together the events," he explained.

Despite the complexity of the case, Þórhallsson affirmed that the investigation is progressing well and that authorities have established a clear overview of the situation.

Detention orders under review

The first detention orders in the case are set to expire tomorrow, with the initial remand period lasting one week. Authorities are still assessing whether extended custody will be necessary.

When asked about the current status of those in custody, Þórhallsson confirmed: "Yes, there are still six in custody."
