Police do not rule out further house searches in homicide investigation
Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson, chief of police for South Iceland, says he cannot disclose further details about the sequence of events leading to the death of the man found in Gufunes on Tuesday morning. The case is being investigated as a possible homicide, extortion, and deprivation of liberty.
Earlier this evening, police confirmed that house searches had been conducted and vehicles seized as part of the investigation. However, when asked whether authorities had located any money that may have been extorted from the deceased, Þórhallsson declined to comment.
Further house searches possible
While no additional searches are currently planned, Þórhallsson stated that the course of the investigation remains open-ended.
“We are still in the early stages, though significant progress has been made. We are working to get a full overview, and whether further searches are conducted depends on what new information emerges. It is certainly possible,” he said.
Police also announced the arrest of another man in connection with the case earlier this evening. According to Þórhallsson, new developments continue to shape the investigation, requiring swift action from law enforcement. It remains undecided whether the newly arrested suspect will be remanded in custody.
Yesterday, the South Iceland District Court ordered the detention of three individuals—two men and one woman—for one week in connection with the case.
Public assistance and multi-agency cooperation
The South Iceland police are working closely with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the capital area police, Suðurnes police, the Office of the National Commissioner, and the District Prosecutor’s Office. Þórhallsson emphasized that this cooperation is ongoing and includes technical support from forensic specialists in the capital area.
Authorities have also received substantial assistance from the public. Þórhallsson noted that people have provided tips on individuals’ movements, shared their insights, and submitted surveillance footage from security and dashboard cameras.
“We’ve received all kinds of materials from the public, which has been valuable to the investigation,” he said.
As the case unfolds, police continue to gather evidence and analyze new information, leaving open the possibility of further developments.
