Police in South Iceland are investigating the death of a man who succumbed to his injuries early yesterday morning. Authorities have confirmed that the nature of his injuries suggests foul play.
As part of the investigation, the National Police Commissioner’s special unit assisted local officers in a police operation in Þorlákshöfn last night. While sources indicate the operation is linked to the case, Helena Rós Sturludóttir, communications director for the National Police Commissioner, declined to confirm the connection.
“Five individuals are currently in police custody in relation to the investigation. The South Iceland police are leading the case, with assistance from law enforcement in the Capital Region, Suðurnes, and West Iceland, as well as the District Prosecutor’s Office and the National Police Commissioner’s special unit,” police stated yesterday.
Two more arrested following high-speed chase
The investigation expanded to Kópavogur yesterday afternoon, where police arrested a sixth suspect. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the Lindahverfi district, but the driver ignored orders to pull over, triggering a pursuit.
The chase ended at an intersection in Kópavogur, where two passengers—a man and a woman—attempted to flee on foot. The man was apprehended immediately, while the woman evaded capture for several hours before being located in eastern Reykjavík around 9 pm last night.
These latest arrests bring the total number of individuals in custody to seven. Heimir Ríkarðsson, assistant chief of police for the capital area, confirmed the development in an interview with mbl.is .

Victim identified as a Þorlákshöfn resident
According to mbl.is sources, the victim was a man in his sixties and a resident of Þorlákshöfn. Police reported that he was still alive when first responders found him in a playground in Gufunes, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson, a senior officer with the South Iceland police, is leading the investigation. While declining to disclose specific details, he emphasized that the case remains in its early stages.
“We are currently taking statements and gathering information with support from the capital area police. The investigation is progressing, but there is still much work to be done,” Þórhallsson stated.
Police conduct extensive search in Þrengslin and Þorlákshöfn
Authorities first responded to a report of the injured man shortly before midnight. According to mbl.is sources, he had entered a vehicle before police initiated a widespread search operation.
Officers stopped multiple vehicles in Þrengslin and heightened security measures in Þorlákshöfn in an effort to track him down.
“There was extensive police activity that night, with multiple vehicle stops and the deployment of stationary patrol cars,” an official source reported.
As the homicide investigation continues, police are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the case and determine the suspects’ roles in the incident.
