Dangerous offender deported

Last Friday, the High Court confirmed a detention order issued by the Reykjanes District Court two days earlier, that an Algerian man be detained until March 12.

The man was caught with forged documents at the airport terminal at Keflavík Airport at the end of September last year and arrested afterward. He admitted that the documents were forged.

The man came here from an unnamed Schengen country, but a closer look at the police systems revealed that the person concerned was banned from re-entering the Schengen area, which he had been banned from since April 30, 2024, an order that was valid for ten years.

When the case was heard in the District Court, it was revealed, among other things, that the man had a criminal record and that the police considered him to be a threat to public order, state security, and the public interest. This assessment was based on a decision by a court in an unnamed foreign country that ruled that the person concerned should be subject to a re-entry ban into the Schengen area.

Convicted eight times

During questioning of the man, it emerged that he had smuggled himself across by boat to an unnamed Schengen country and from there on to an unnamed country and then to Iceland.

When this became clear, the man was taken back to the border at Keflavík Airport and was examined there to see whether he met the conditions for entry to this country. Information was called from abroad, from where he had applied for protection but had been refused. In that country, he had been involved in criminal activities and had been convicted a total of eight times, including for drug offenses, serious assault, burglary, and theft. After serving his sentence for the offense until April 30, 2024, he was forcibly removed from the country with a ten-year ban on re-entry into the Schengen area.
