Expect to save over ISK 70 billion
Sixty efficiency proposals presented at yesterday's government press conference are expected to save the treasury ISK 71 billion between 2026 and 2030.
The government received around ten thousand savings proposals from the public, ministries, and government agencies.
ISK 1,550 billion in spending this year
The presentation of the 60 proposals states that in many cases it is not possible to estimate the estimated impact on the treasury's operations, but other proposals are accompanied by an assessment of such impact. It can therefore be assumed that the savings from the proposals will be even greater.
However, it must be noted that the time for the efficiency group to make detailed calculations was limited and that the assessment is therefore based in some cases on conservative and simple calculations.
In 2025, the Icelandic government's spending is estimated to be around ISK 1,550 billion, or around ISK 4 million per capita.
About 10 thousand proposals in about 4 thousand submissions
3,985 submissions were received from the public, 10 from ministries, and 92 from government agencies.
The scope of projects covered by the proposals includes mergers and cooperation, operational optimization, public works, reduction of projects, increased restraint, and reforms in the regulatory framework.
The sale of assets and actions on the revenue side of government operations and transfer systems are also mentioned, but these projects are outside the scope of the work, according to a statement from the Government of Iceland.
