Icelandair plans to stop flying to Ísafjörður next year. Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair's CEO, says that the issue was discussed with some stakeholders earlier today. He assumes that the flight will cease after the summer season in 2026.
“This concerns that we have been flying Bombardier Dash 200 aircraft to Ísafjörður, Ilulissat, and Nuuk. These are the only aircraft that have been able to reach those airports. But now the construction of the airports in Greenland is coming to an end, as longer runways will be put into use next year. Then larger aircraft will be able to fly there. Then these smaller aircraft will not be competitive.”
“Then only Ísafjörður will be left and it will not be the only one to operate such an aircraft, and the other aircraft that we have in the domestic flights will not be able to reach Ísafjörður.”
He says the aim is to take the planes out of operation at Icelandair.
Have not discussed the issue with politicians
He says that the issue has not been discussed with politicians.
"We started today to review this with our staff and partners in the west. The conversation has only just begun," Bogason says.
"This has worked when we have had several destinations where we can use these planes, but when there is only one destination left, this is not a sustainable operation and we have to respond to it."
