Bad weather disrupts measurements
Two earthquakes were measured last night in the Sundhnúkagígar crater row area, the larger one measuring 1.6 in magnitude.
Bjarki Kaldalón Friis, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that bad weather is disrupting earthquake measurements in the area, but there have likely been smaller earthquakes that have not been detected on the meters due to the weather.
He says that inflation is continuing and there is still a risk of an eruption, but the amount of magma that has accumulated under Svartsengi has become greater than it was before the last eruption, which began on November 20.
"The situation has not changed. There is still an increased risk of an eruption. We are on our toes and watching on webcams if anything happens," says Bjarki.
