Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has issued a brief statement following the heated meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in the White House yesterday, where the latter harshly criticized Zelensky and his Vice President, J.D. Vance. They called Zelensky ungrateful and also accused him of disrespecting the United States during the meeting. Trump then threw him out of the room after the meeting. Gunnarsdóttir says Iceland stands with Ukraine, in the statement published on X.

“They are playing with fire”
Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, outgoing vice-chair of the Independence Party and former foreign minister, says the current US government does not seem to advocate for real freedom.
She hopes it will not be long before the US changes course, as it is certainly heading in the wrong direction.
This was stated in a speech she gave at the Independence Party’s national convention earlier today, and she said she said this with “deep sadness in her heart.”
“They are playing with fire and have even now begun to burn down important aspects of the worldview that is the basis of peace and freedom; for us, for Europe and for the United States itself,” Gylfadóttir said.
It’s not good for Europe and not for the United States
“I have faith in the United States and the Americans, but do not be fooled. What is happening now is not good for the world, not good for Europe and it is not good for Iceland. And not good for the United States itself.”
She said the United States is indeed heading in the wrong direction, but that hopefully it won't be long before they change course
"I am sure that history will be unkind to those who are deceived by what is really happening and we are watching."
