People from the media were recently made to leave the offices of the State Conciliation and Mediation, called the Karphús. The reason given was that negotiations were at a sensitive point, but the negotiating committees of the Icelandic Teachers' Union and the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities are now meeting there.

The State Mediator submitted an internal proposal in the teachers' wage dispute on Thursday. The board of the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities approved the proposal yesterday.

"The board of the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities declares its willingness to follow the path that the state mediator has proposed in the wage dispute between the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities and the Icelandic Teachers' Union, even though the proposal involves considerable costs. The board believes it is important to show a willingness to negotiate, and after a meeting with the CEOs of the municipalities, the board agrees to finalize the wage agreement with this important class," the announcement says

The Icelandic Teachers' Union's negotiating committee had until 1 pm today to respond to the proposal. It is not clear what the position of the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities is.

If the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities rejects the proposal, strike action will begin again today and will cover fourteen preschools and seven primary schools. The strike action would be temporary in primary schools but permanent in kindergartens.
