The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, has sent her best wishes to Donald Trump and from the Icelandic people on his inauguration as President of the United States.

Trump was elected President for a second time in the elections on November 5, 2024, and the inauguration will take place today.

After Trump won the elections in November, Bjarni Benediktsson, then Prime Minister, and Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Trump on his victory. However, Tómasdóttir delayed the best wishes and in a response from the office, it was stated that it would be done formally when Trump was inaugurated.

Share common values and interests

A statement from the Office of the President of Iceland states that in the letter the President celebrates the successful diplomatic relations between the countries for decades and reaffirms that as founding members of the Atlantic Alliance, Iceland and the United States share both common values and interests.

“We Icelanders greatly value our friendship with the Americans and the ever-growing mutual ties, including in the fields of trade, education, culture, and tourism,” the President of Iceland said in a letter.

The President highlighted that Iceland enjoys the good fortune of being considered the most peaceful country in the world and wants to use its influence for good. The President then recalled the summit in Höfði when Iceland became the venue for historic talks between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in their attempt to end the Cold War.

The President said that there is still a call for peace in the world and that an international commitment is needed now, as before. She is always ready to support sincere efforts to promote peace and justice.
