Bus overturns in Hellisheiði
A bus with about 20 passengers on board overturned in Hellisheiði near Hveradalur at ten o'clock this morning.
Hjördís Guðmundsdóttir, information officer for civil protection, says in an interview with mbl.is that the mass casualty plan for civil protection has been activated, but according to her, there were no injuries.
Garðar Már Garðarsson, chief police officer for the South Iceland police, says that the bus overturned at the bottom of the Hveradalabrekkan slope, but the police received a report of the accident just after 9:30 this morning. The road was very slippery and the bus overturned on its side and ended up about 20-30 meters from the road, according to Garðar
He says that 20 foreign tourists were on the bus and none of them were injured. Emergency services are on the scene and Garðar says that all passengers have been taken to shelter at the Hellisheidi power station where they are waiting for another bus to come and pick them up.
An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway by the South Iceland police, according to a Facebook post by the South Iceland police.
