The torpedo bomb that got caught in the fishing gear of a trawler was pulled out into Eyjafjörður this evening and placed in a place where it will be destroyed by publication.
This is stated in a statement by the Icelandic Coast Guard.
The Icelandic Coast Guard's special operations unit was called out to the case earlier today and the police in North Iceland closed part of the port area in Akureyri after a torpedo got caught in the fishing gear of the trawler Björgar EA.
The Icelandic Coast Guard's bomb disposal experts returned the bomb that got caught in the fishing gear of the Björg EA yesterday to the sea. It was towed out to sea from Akureyri Harbour to be destroyed.
There was a lot of preparedness in the port area in Akureyri yesterday and the Icelandic Coast Guard's bomb disposal unit was among the responders. The Akureyri fishing company's fish processing plant ÚA was evacuated as a result, and a street closure on Hjalteyrargata was in effect while the bomb was being moved.
The street closure has now been lifted and the fish processing plant is operating normally today.
