Stormy weather hit the south and west of the country last night and early this morning with wind, sleet and rain, but the weather has mostly subsided by morning.
A meteorologist says that the weather will be clearer in the southern part of the country today, but it will be sharper in the north in the afternoon, and there will be very sharp winds in many places tonight. The weather is expected to worsen in the west of the country around the time Christmas approaches.
Birgir Örn Höskuldsson, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that the weather will be fair in the early hours of tomorrow, Christmas Eve. Still, as the Christmas holiday approaches, we can expect sharp snowstorms and bad weather in the south and west of the country. He says that the situation will be similar on Christmas Day.
"We can expect heavy thunderstorms tomorrow evening and when the storm passes it will be very windy and blinding and almost extreme weather. There is a similar outlook for Christmas Day and so people should be careful in these conditions. It will not be fun to be out on the roads in this kind of weather and we encourage people to pay close attention to the weather forecast and traffic," Höskuldsson tells mbl.is.
He says that the storm will reach the Northwest, but the northeastern half of the country should see little precipitation tomorrow and on Christmas Day.
