The government coalition agreement of the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Reform Party, and the People's Party will be presented this weekend and a new government will be formed as a result.

This was announced at a short press conference that began in the Althingi yesterday.

The parties decided on December 3 to begin government formation talks and the chairwomen announced on Friday last week, December 13, that they would begin writing a government coalition agreement.

It was announced at the press conference that the chairmen had discussed the division of ministries between the parties and that these proposals would be presented to party members in the near future.

Have received a lot of help from the administration

It was also announced that the parties have received a lot of help from the administration in their work, as almost 60 memoranda have been written in connection with the work.

"We have gone over a lot of details. It is quite clear that this trust between us is based on the fact that we have also agreed on certain facts and a certain structure, but then we also just need to deal with the politics.

But we are very grateful for all the contributions that have come from the administration in this work. They have put in a lot of effort and we have received quite several memoranda and that has been very helpful in this preparation,” says Kristrún Frostadóttir, chair of the Social Democratic Alliance.

Strong, united government

Regarding the division of ministries, Frostadóttir says that a discussion has been held about where each party's will lies and that a certain balance is being sought when it comes to division. The situation is that areas of interest and emphasis are uneven between the parties.

Then it will become clear this weekend how the government will be structured, but according to Frostadóttir, it is important that people are in positions where they can push things quickly and surely into implementation, but the key thing is that the group is united.

"We emphasize this: A strong, united government," says Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, chair of the Liberal Reform Party.
