The ski resort in Mt Bláfjöll was scheduled to open for the first time this winter at 2 pm today. It was announced on the ski resort's Facebook page early this morning, but since the wind in the area has increased significantly and looks set to pick up even more as the day progresses, Mt Bláfjöll will be closed today.

"I was really excited early this morning, but the weather is changing quickly. The wind started to pick up much sooner than I thought, so we have to postpone the opening," says Einar Bjarnason, operations manager of the Mt Bláfjöll ski resort, in an interview with mbl.is.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is not good, but 10-18 m/s winds are predicted with snowfall or sleet. The weather outlook for the weekend is good and there is a chance that skiers can strap on their skis and ski down the slopes in Mt Bláfjöll.

Hopefully we can open before Christmas

" I'll just start fixing the whole area up again to keep the snow that's coming. The weather looks better after tomorrow and hopefully, we'll be able to open the ski area before Christmas.  That could be an incentive for skiers to check their ski equipment and get out for a winter pass," Bjarnason says.

He thinks ideally it should always be possible to open the ski area before Christmas with the introduction of a snowmaking system that was put into operation last year, and the system has eight snow guns. Last year, the first opening day was December 21.

"95 percent of the snow in the ski area is manufactured snow and we're ready to open if the weather permits," Bjarnason says, but snowmaking has been underway in Mt Bláfjöll for the past few weeks.

As you can see in the video below, there was a brisk wind in Mt Bláfjöll this morning.
