Icelander named Photographer of the Year in New York

A stunning photograph of the eye of the crater during the eruption of Litli-Hrútut in August 2023 won an international photography award in New York, USA. The Icelander who took the photograph was also named Photographer of the Year. You can see the award-winning photo here below.

The Volcano Eye is a photograph by Icelander Gunnar Freyr Gunnarsson and was named photo of the year in the New York Photography Awards.

In addition, Gunnar himself was named Photographer of the Year.

"No, not at all," Gunnarsson says in an interview with mbl.is and continues: "I was actually in shock. I've never really participated in a photography competition like this before and never won anything before, so this came as a surprise."

About six thousand people participated in the competition from 55 countries.
