Kristrún Frostadóttir, chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party, and Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, chairwoman of Viðreisn, spoke after the results of yesterday's parliamentary elections were announced.

Gunnarsdóttir confirmed this to reporters when she arrived for a meeting with the President of Iceland at Bessastaðir at 11 am.

"Kristrún and I have only spoken, yes, between panels and sittings with you."

It has been said that the Social Democratic Alliance and the Liberal Reform Party are the parties most likely to form a new government, along with a third party, possibly the People's Party.

Frostadóttir met with the President at 9 am this morning, but when she spoke to reporters after the meeting, she did not want to reveal which chairmen she had spoken to. She did say, however, that it was natural at this point that some chairmen were talking.

"I think it's very natural at this point, but I'm just going to let the process take place naturally," she said, referring to the fact that Tómasdóttir is scheduled to speak to all the chairmen of the parties that entered parliament today.

Recommends that Frostadóttir be given the mandate

Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, chairwoman of the Liberal Reform Party, recommended to the President of Iceland at their meeting this morning that Kristrún Frostadóttir be given the mandate to form a government.

"My message to the President was that Frostadóttir should be given the mandate to form a government," she said after the meeting.

Asked whether she and Frostadóttir intend to form a coalition government together, she replied:

"Our relationship with Frostadóttir is very good, yes. We are going to try to form a strong and cohesive government, hopefully."

Gunnarsdóttir said things would become clearer and mentioned that the two had not discussed any policy issues.

Asked if the conversations with Frostadóttir had been of a nature that made her optimistic, she replied: "Yes. I see a certain pattern of governments that can be formed."

She said the president would have to talk to more chairmen and then the day would have to pass.
