Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, chairman of the Progressive Party, arrived at a meeting with President Halla Tómasdóttir in Bessastaðir last of the chairs of the political parties.

He spoke briefly to the media there and told them that he was not on his way to the government. “That seems to me to be the message,” Jóhannesson says.

He also believes it is clear that the election results are a call for a government by the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Reform party, and the People’s Party.

He says he does not foresee government formation talks going in a way that the Progressive Party will end up in a majority coalition.

Asked whether bitterness can be detected in his words, Sigurður replies: "Not at all. However, I would point out that Iceland is in an extremely good place and there are great times ahead in Iceland as long as people don't mess it up."
