The country is in the Christmas spirit this first weekend of Advent and there are a variety of Christmas related activities on offer all over the country.

Reykjavík has been decorated a lot this year and the lights of the Christmas cat in Austurstræti have been turned on. A Christmas market will open at Austurvöllur in Reykjavík at 1 pm today and on that occasion, there will be entertainment, including the singer Páll Óskar and the University of Iceland Women's Choir, in addition to some yule lads being around. The Christmas Valley in the Family and Petting Zoo was opened yesterday, all decorated with Christmas lights, and today the Reykjavík Forestry Association's Christmas market in Elliðavatnsbær will open. There is a Christmas workshop and market in the Reykjavík Art Museum, Christmas bingo in Tjarnarbíó, and much more. Tomorrow the Christmas lights will be turned on at the Oslo Tree in Austurvöllur.

At Eiðistorg in Seltjarnarnes, the mayor turned on the lights on the Christmas tree at 11 today and then a market opened there with 29 stalls which will be open until four o'clock.

In Garðabær, the town's Advent Festival is at the Icelandic Design Museum, the Garðabær Library, and the pedestrian street at Garðatorg today. The Sjálandsskóli Children's Choir and Jazztríó together with singers will sing Christmas songs on the pedestrian street from 13-14.30 and there will also be a pop-up market. Also worth mentioning is Óróasmiðja at the Design Museum, Christmas crafts at the library, and then a Christmas ball at Garðatorg at 14.20 where people walk around the Christmas tree and sing.

The Christmas village in Hafnarfjörður opened early this year and will be in full swing this weekend and you can also go on a treasure hunt in the town where cartoon yule lads will give clues. The Youth Theatre Christmas Choir, the Hafnarfjörður Women's Choir, and the Þrestir Men's Choir will perform. Tomorrow you can get your picture with the Santa Claus in Hellisgerði between 2-5 pm and the lights will be lit on the mourning tree in Hellisgerði at 6 pm tomorrow.

In Akureyri, the Christmas market at Ráðhústorgið will open tomorrow at 3 pm and the lights on the large Christmas tree will be lit with trumpet blasts, choir singing, and Santa Claus's jump. It will be possible to buy various Christmas goods in decorated Christmas houses and you can step into the Christmas Adventure, an exhibition in the window at Hafnarstræti 88.

The Advent festival in Húsavík started yesterday and will last throughout the weekend. There is a Christmas market in the Museum, live music in both the Maritime Museum and the Húsavík Church, and a great Christmas atmosphere in the town.

The lights will be lit on the Christmas tree at Silfurtorg in Ísafjörður today and Halldóra's theatre group will sing Christmas carols. The cocoa and market stall sale for primary school students will start at 3:30 p.m. and half an hour later the band Villimenn will play Christmas carols.

There will be an Advent choir course for children born in 2019 in Selfoss Church and later today at 1 pm and a Literature Hour in the House will be held at the Árnessýsla Heritage Museum tomorrow at 3 p.m. where writers will read from their new books.
