There was some trouble with tourists in the vicinity of the eruption site last night and the conditions in Svartsengi are dangerous.

This is what Úlfar Lúðvíksson, the police chief in Suðurnes, says in an interview with mbl.is.

"There was a bit of trouble with tourists," he says, explaining that it was mainly at the intersection of Grindavíkurvegur Road and Reykjanesbraut Road.

Appearing suddenly in the light beams

In the dark, it can be difficult for drivers to notice tourists who do not have reflectors, and Lúðvíksson says that this needs to be monitored.

"They are perhaps the first and last threat to other traffic. These are just barely visible people who suddenly appear in the light beams. I just witnessed it myself," he says.

However, thankfully everything has been blessed, according to him.

Working on raising the defense walls

He says the situation in Svartsengi is dangerous because of the lava flowing along the defense wall.

“The lava has become quite thick and work is being done to raise this defense wall,” he says.

He says that there are concerns about this and that is why work is being done day and night to raise the walls.

“There is just very constant activity in this volcanic eruption, although it may not be as majestic to see from the Reykjanesbraut Road,” he concludes.
