The Blue Lagoon has decided to extend its closure until November 29, but it was originally scheduled to reopen tomorrow. Until the opening, various options will be examined regarding where parking can be set up, but lava flowed over the main parking lot of the Blue Lagoon the other day.
This is what Helga Árnadóttir, the manager of the Blue Lagoon, says in an interview with mbl.is.
"Throughout all these events, we have always closed a few days in advance because we always need to be able to see through the scenario at any time. That is exactly what we are doing now because we have to inform our guests who have booked with us as far in advance as we trust ourselves to at any given time," says Helga.
May change
She says that the Blue Lagoon cannot say: "We are closed until we are open." The company must provide guests with some predictability.
She says that the timing of the closure is not set in stone as the situation is being assessed from day to day.
The Blue Lagoon is currently scheduled to be closed until Friday, but new dates will be announced as soon as anything changes.
Several options are being considered
On Friday, about 350 parking spaces were covered in lava, as well as bus stops. Regarding new parking, Árnadóttir says that there are several options in the situation that are being examined and implemented. She says that this will be worked on in the coming days.
She adds that the company is closely monitoring the development of the eruption.
“It is amazing to see how the defense walls have worked now and how the response teams are monitoring the development and responding in a smooth and professional manner,” she says.
