The police chief in Suðurnes requested the assistance of the rescue team last night in asking people to respect the recommendation not to go to the eruption in Sundhnúkagígar crater row.

Among other things, at one point a bus arrived with foreign tourists who were planning to go out into the lava in the dark to see the eruption with their own eyes, in addition to Icelanders, who also had planned to look at it.

According to Hjördís Guðmundsdóttir, communications manager for civil protection, the people came from several directions.

“Of course, there is full understanding that it is exciting to see a volcano,” Guðmundsdóttir says but mentions that the area is dark, icy, and polluted with volcanic ash, not to mention that there is no parking.

Monitoring the progress of the lava flow

Guðmundsdóttir says that the progress of the lava flow will continue to be monitored today. Yesterday, lava was prevented from reaching a hole in a defense wall near the Blue Lagoon. The defense walls were built so that the lava could not reach the lagoon, and the landscape helped.
