The Icelandic Meteorological Office warns of an increased risk of landslides and rockfalls in the western part of the country, but considerable precipitation, in the form of rain, is predicted in the Westfjords, Barðaströnd, Snæfellsnes, and the South today and tomorrow.
On the website of the Icelandic Met Office, the weather forecast predicts considerable accumulated rainfall in the western part of the country today.
Other rainfall returns will follow around midnight and into the evening of Tuesday, November 12. "Due to the continued warmth, all the precipitation will be in the form of rain, and it is assumed that snow, which may still be in ravines and on the top of the mountains, will melt due to continuous precipitation and thus increase the amount of water in the waterways," says the announcement on the Icelandic Met Office's website.
Water growth can be expected in rivers and streams
It also says that as a result of this rainfall, higher water levels in rivers and streams can be expected, and waterways that are normally dry will fill up.
Surface movements such as rockfalls, channelized mudslides and landslides can occur without warning and suddenly. "Therefore, you are warned not to stop under steep slopes and there is a reason to be careful on the country's roads, especially in the Westfjords," says the announcement.
