Teachers’ protest meeting draws a crowd
The teachers' protest meeting that took place in Háskólbíó this afternoon was packed.
Teachers were clearly in a fighting mood, but they are currently on a selective strike in a waging dispute with the state and local authorities.
Magnús Þór Jónsson, chairman of the Icelandic Teachers' Association, delivered an address at the meeting, and teachers Egill Helgason and Hulda María Magnúsdóttir as well.
The teachers also passed a resolution at the meeting demanding that the government uphold the agreements that had been made and ensure that teachers' salaries are comparable to experts on the public market.

Actress Ólafía Hrönn Jónsdóttir chaired the meeting and musicians Valdimar and Örn Eldjárn performed.
Some of the members of the Icelandic Teachers' Union are currently on strike, but strikes began in nine schools on Tuesday last week. Strike actions have been announced in a total of thirteen schools, but it has not been ruled out that more will be added if agreements are not reached soon.
