At six o'clock this morning, rescue teams on the northern side of the West fjords were called out because of a fishing boat that had run aground in Súgandafjörður.

In an announcement from the Landsbjörg Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, the rescue boats Stella from Flateyri, Kobbi Láka from Bolungarvík, and the rescue ship Gísli Jóns from Ísafjörður were already on their way to the spot, along with the rescue team Björg in Suðureyri, which sent rescuers by land as well as by hose boat. At the same time, the crew of the Coast Guard's helicopter was called out as a matter of priority.

When rescuers arrived at the boat at sea, it was clear that it would be difficult to land a boat on the beach near the stranded boat. The tube boat from Björg took one of Kobba Láka's crew on board outside, landed on the beach just outside the stranded boat, and managed to put two people ashore there.

They then walked to a beach and helped the two crew members who were in the boat ashore. They were quite fit and thought they could walk towards Suðureyri, or where they could be reached by car.

Will try to get the boat afloat this afternoon

The guard's helicopter was then well on its way and it was decided that it would lift the men from the stranded ship from the shore. They were then taken by helicopter to Suðureyri, where the police received them for questioning.

The boat is still in the water and will be checked to try to get it afloat later today, but high tide will be around 17.00.
