No accidents in the snow this morning
Guðbrandur Sigurðsson, assistant superintendent in the traffic department of the police in the capital area, says that the traffic in the capital area was heavy and heavy this morning, but it snowed slightly in the southwest of Iceland.
"The main traffic routes were wet and in the eastern part of the city there was perhaps more snow on the sides of the road and possibly some ice in the Breiðholt. This snowfall slowed down the traffic a lot, as some people may still be on summer tires and have therefore driven carefully," Sigurðsson said to mbl.is.
Often when traffic slows down, there are fewer accidents
He adds that as of 7 o'clock this morning, there have been no reports of traffic accidents.
"Often when the traffic slows down like this, there are fewer accidents,"he says and points out that when there are minor collisions or rear-end collisions, árekstur.is, which is a partner of the insurance companies, handles such cases.
Sigurðsson says that people are often careful at first when Winter comes knocking on the door, but then they get used to the driving conditions and possibly bring winter tires or studded tires under the car.
"When the situation has become persistent with snow and ice, people sometimes start driving faster because they get used to the driving conditions and feel that they have become safer and better on the winter tires, and then the number of accidents or collisions often increases."
