Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland, and Björn Skúlason, her husband, are heading to Denmark today for a state visit that starts in Copenhagen tomorrow.

Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir will be accompanied by an official delegation.

An announcement from the president's office states that it is customary for a new president's first state visit in office to be to Denmark.

This is also the first state visit that the Danes invite after Frederik X became king.

The aim of the visit is to strengthen the historical ties between Iceland and Denmark and further strengthen the close relationship between the two nations.

Business delegation included

It also says that, in parallel with the visit, a business delegation organized by Grænvangur's Íslandstofa, the Federation of Icelandic Industry, and the Danish-Icelandic Chamber of Commerce will travel to Denmark with representatives of about 50 Icelandic companies, who will attend part of the program with the king and president, together with representatives from the Danish business community.

The main focus of the trade delegation is on the strengthening of existing trade relations and increased cooperation on energy issues and green solutions and common interests in meeting the climate and sustainability goals of nations.

"The visit will begin on the morning of Tuesday, October 8, when the royal couple will receive the presidential couple, who will arrive by boat at the old customs dock Toldboden in Copenhagen. From there, the couple will travel together by horse-drawn carriage to the official reception ceremony at Amalienborg Palace," says the announcement.
