It is not known whether an Icelander will be granted amnesty in Vietnam
The Vietnamese government will soon grant amnesty to 3,800 prisoners, including 20 foreigners.
The AFP news report states that the foreigners who will be granted amnesty are from Iceland, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, South Africa, and the United States.
In response to mbl.is' inquiry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the matter, it is stated that the Ministry is aware of one Icelandic citizen who is serving a prison sentence in Vietnam, but cannot provide further information on individual cases.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not received confirmation from the Vietnamese authorities as to whether the person in question is among the prisoners to be granted amnesty," the response further states.
In August, the Vietnamese government reported that 643 foreigners are in prisons in the country, and according to the human rights organization Human Rights Watch, there are about 160 political prisoners behind bars in the country.
