Arnar Þór Jónsson, a lawyer and former presidential candidate, has founded a new political party called Lýðræðisflokkurinn or the Democratic Party - an organization for self-determination.

This is stated in an announcement from Jónsson, who says that the party was founded for the purpose of "countering the trend towards over-management and mismanagement which is bringing the Icelandic public and Icelandic companies to their knees".

The announcement says that in recent weeks, many people have encouraged him to found a political party to tempt society to change for the better.

Jónsson was elected as a deputy of the Independence Party in 2021, but resigned from the party when he announced his presidential candidacy in January. He received 5.1% support in the elections in June.

Jónsson was in talks with the Centre Party but last week it was then reported that the talks had come to a standstill and had yielded nothing.

Jónsson's announcement about the new party says: "The Democratic Party is about promoting democracy, freedom and self-determination. This new political organization will be based on integrity and the best-proven values. I am ready to go into this fight with all the brave and well-intentioned people who want to fight it with me wholeheartedly, with fairness and wisdom as a guide, for our country, Iceland."
