"The weight of lambs after the summer is lower than sometimes before, and this can be attributed to the cold weather in the first week of June and the unfavorable weather this summer. This has an impact," says Eyjólfur Ingvi Bjarnason, a farmer in Ásgarður in Dalir and chairman of the section of sheep farmers in the Icelandic Farmers Association.

He is also a consultant at the Agricultural Advisory Center and therefore knows the situation in agriculture well and from many angles.

400 thousand lambs will be slaughtered this fall

As stated in Morgunblaðið this week, the dead weight of the sheep in the current autumn slaughter is now up to a kilogram less than it was last year. This is especially true for the sheep of farmers in the North and the East, where there was a significant loss of livelihood following a drought early in June. The weather in June was followed by the fact that cattle tended to graze close to farms until the summer, and on many farms haymaking began much later than in an average year for that reason. From this, it also follows that when sheep come from the summer fields to the settlements, there is less grass for grazing at home on the farms.
