The founder of the Yeastie Boys Bagels has arrived in collaboration with Deig and started conjuring up the famous sandwiches this morning, which are very popular in the state of California.

There have been a lot going on in the sister places Deig and Le Kock in Tryggvagata in downtown Reykjavík. Recently, the well-known hamburger expert George Motz visited Le Kock and cooked his most famous hamburger for one evening. This weekend, two of California's top bagel-making experts are coming here, and visitors to Deig will have the opportunity to taste their famous sandwiches.

Evan Fox, founder and owner of Yeastie Boys Bagels in Los Angeles, is here with his colleague Josie Schneider. Yeastie Boys run several bagel carts in Los Angeles and their reputation has spread far and wide. The bagels are so famous that the company was invited to collaborate with Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. The visit here and the collaboration with Deig is their first outside the country.

"Yes, apart from the partnership with Pizza Hut in New York, this is the only partnership we have ventured into outside of Los Angeles. And the first outside the US. This is therefore very special for us. We are grateful to be here," Fox says.

Collaboration in Los Angeles?

He says his friend connected them with Markús Ingi Guðnason and colleagues at Deig. The friend in question is Lily Rosenthal, who came to this country with her father, the well-known Phil Rosenthal, during the filming of his Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil. "Lily met Markús and they started talking about Los Angeles and the Yeastie Boys came up." Markús told Lily that he was a fan and had been inspired by our work. Lily connected us via WhatsApp and we hit it off right away. Markús has already become a good friend and I'm excited to show him LA when he comes to visit. Hopefully, we can do a Deig collaboration in LA.”

Deig has been very popular in the city center in recent years, where people have been able to get great bagels and donuts. Evan tells us that this weekend people will get the Deig vibe but with Yeastie Boys emphasis. “Their bakery is amazing. We then included a few things that I think people will like."

He says that Markús and his colleagues got the Yeastie Boys' recipe for cheddar jalapeño cream cheese, schmutz sauce (garlic aioli), and smoked white fish. "Some of the ideas that Markús and his people came up with made them even better." This has already become a great partnership," he says. The bagel masters open the doors at seven in the morning on Saturday and Sunday and are there until everything is sold out.

When asked to name the most exciting thing on the menu, Evan mentions their pastrami imported from Los Angeles. "We have specially made Yeastie Boys pastrami that we smoke for 30 hours and put in a specially made brine with special spices."

Eva and Josie arrived in the country this week and, along with the preparations, have looked around Reykjavík and the surrounding area. They went to take pictures in the Blue Lagoon and there is more on the agenda. "The Blue Lagoon was very beautiful, a unique experience. Iceland is an amazing place."
