A request came from within the government for further discussion on the deportation of Yazan Tamimi before he was deported yesterday. Minister of Justice Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir agreed to that request.
That is the reason why the Palestinian boy, who is eleven years old and has muscular dystrophy, was not deported.
Protests were on the airport in the early morning Monday before Yazan Tamini was moved back to the hospital.
This is not normal administration
Minister of Justice Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir says that it was not normal administration when Yazan Tamimi's deportation from the country was postponed yesterday. She says that it can be argued that she made an arbitrary decision.
In an interview on RÚV National Television Hafsteinsdóttir was interviewed, as well as Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, Minister of Finance, Inga Sæland, chairman of the People's Party, and Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Member of Parliament for the Confederation.
"We have the government to make these decisions and they did. I said earlier and I have said it today that I have full confidence in the Immigration Service and the Immigration Appeals Committee," said Hafsteinsdóttir after she was asked about her confidence in the country's systems, but a decision had been reached on two levels that Yazan would be sent from country.
Need to establish exit procedures
"This is the process we have agreed to go through." Here came the applicants for international protection. Some get yes and some get no, and it's a difficult situation when individuals refuse to leave the country, who here are refused, refuse all cooperation with the government, but still have to go," said the Minister of Justice and added.
"That is why I have advocated that we need to establish exit resources here. I have it now on my parliamentary agenda this fall to submit a bill on departure remedies so that we can fulfill this duty of ours within the Schengen cooperation in an adequate manner."
Asked if she had made an arbitrary decision, the Minister of Justice said that an argument could be made for that.
"I don't really have the legal authority to step into a case like this."
Protested outside the cabinet meeting this morning
A number of people have gathered at the bottom of Hverfisgata, where the government met for a meeting this morning.
The people are there to protest against the government after yesterday's attempt by the authorities to deport the Palestinian boy Yazan Tamimi.
Police have blocked traffic on Hverfisgata between Lækjargata and Ingólfsstræti.
