Watched giant icebergs in the sunset

"It was absolutely magnificent and one of the most beautiful things I've seen in Iceland," says Pálmar Ragnarsson in an interview with mbl.is.

Ragnarsson, together with his father Ragnar Torfason, sailed around the city-sized icebergs at Drangi and out at Mt Reykjaneshyrna on Strandir yesterday. His father was born and raised in Strandir.

"I come here every summer and I've never seen this before." The people who live here say that every few years sea ice comes close to land, but that this one is the biggest that has been seen in many years."

Ragnarsson is gathering sheep this weekend in Árneshreppur county with his family.

"We are navigating rather untrodden paths at Eyvindarfjörður, which is near Drangi. This is a land that no one goes to except by boat, and we turn our eyes to the first iceberg and sail towards it," Ragnarsson reports.

He says he was both beautiful and quite big.

Got seasick in the big waves

"Then we go herding and then we see another big iceberg at Mt Reykjaneshyrna and we decide after dinner to sail there."

Ragnarsson says he was a little further away and believes the iceberg was about four kilometers from land.

"It was bigger and must have been almost 30 meters high, although I couldn't calculate it myself."

Ragnar Torfason is Pálmar's father and was the captain of the trip. Ragnar grew up in Strandir.

He describes that there was a decent wave height and that one French woman who was with them in the boat threw up due to seasickness.

"It was so beautiful and we saw that iceberg in the sunset," he concludes.
