The funeral of Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir, who died of her wounds after a stabbing attack in Reykjavík on Culture Night, began in Hallgrímskirkja church at 3:00 pm today.

After Bryndís Klara's death, her father asked that her passing would lead to systematic and thought-out ways to improve the reality of Icelandic society.

Bryndís Klara's grandfather reiterates this call of the family in an obituary in Morgunblaðið this morning. "Now a national effort is needed to improve Icelandic society. Children and young people must be cared for and their distress and violence, which unfortunately seems so widespread, must be dealt with. Schools and the government need to come and support this project. But above all, these are tasks that need to be carried out in the homes."

The reaction to the attack has been strong in society in recent weeks, and a lot of attention has been focused on violent behavior and the carrying of weapons by young people. Thus, the government launched an action group for violence towards and among children earlier this month. President Halla Tómasdóttir also emphasized this issue at the opening of Alþingi this week, and so did Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson in his policy speech a day later.

Bryndís Klara's family has established a memorial fund dedicated to love becoming the only weapon in society. "The fund will support projects and actions that contribute directly to the increased well-being and safety of young people in Icelandic society."
