Photos: Empty Laugardalslaug swimming pool
The Laugardals swimming pool will be closed for the next two weeks and the director of the pool, Drífa Magnúsdóttir, says that the work that started last year when the pool was closed for over three weeks is being continued and that it is now better known what is going on.
The pool will be closed until September 24, but work will include renovating and maintaining the portholes, which began last year.
Extensive construction work was carried out last year. The initial schedule called for a two-week closure, but due to unforeseen repairs that also had to be undertaken, the time frame was extended to over three weeks. The pool also had to be closed for a short time this spring due to a malfunction.
There were problems last year
Asked why the repairs that are being carried out now were not completed last year, Magnúsdóttir says that some problems arose then. However, the same parties are working on the project, and she is optimistic that it will improve.
"We aim to do this in two weeks now, although this is a similar project to what we did last year. We are prepared differently for it now and they know better the scope of the repairs when they are emptied," says the director.
No plans to close next year
When asked, she says that hopefully the pool will not have to be closed again next year for such a long time.
"But as always happens in general, in I think most pools in the country, there is always a closure once a year. It is emptied and the bottom is cleaned. It hasn't been done every year so far, so we don't have any plans to close next year, at least not yet," she says and adds.
"But this is just primarily to finish this project. So along the way, of course, when it's closed and we're emptying the outdoor area, there are things like cleaning that's also done."
She says that the indoor pool will still be open for school swimming and swimming practice, and therefore there will continue to be activities in the building. She also states that she is optimistic that the pool will reopen in two weeks.
