Einar Þorsteinsson, the mayor of Reykjavík, will be around the city center tomorrow and will, among other things, start the half and full marathons in Íslandsbanki's Reykjavík Marathon 2024, together with Friða Bjarnadóttir.

Bjarnadóttir was the first Icelandic woman to run a full marathon in Iceland and in the first Reykjavík Marathon held in 1984, but she was barred from participating in the marathon the year before.

Knútur Óskarsson will then start the 10 km race, but he is one of the founders of the Reykjavík Marathon and was its chairman for a long time.

Will possibly be baking waffles

The mayor is not going to invite people to his home to coffee and waffles tomorrow, as his predecessor in the job, Dagur B. Eggertsson, usually did on Culture Night. The reason why is that  Þorsteinsson lives in Breiðholt and not in the city center.

However, Þorsteinsson decided to keep the waffle tradition alive and plans to visit residents in the city center and bake waffles with them.

"I'm going to check out a waffle coffee and maybe pick up the waffle iron," he says in an interview with mbl.is.

Honor the people of Grindavík

The residents of Grindavík are the guests of honor at Culture Night this year and will offer a varied program.

"I encourage everyone to go down to Reykjavík City Hall and see what the residents of Grindavík are offering and show them solidarity," Þorsteinsson says.

The mayor will also inaugurate Hörputorg where it will be possible to see a brass band battle which, according to him, is one of the livelier events of Culture Night.
