Biggest earthquake this year

A big earthquake struck at 10.37 pm last night. It was felt in many places in the capital area.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.1 and its source was 3 km northeast of Mt Stóra-Skógfell. Its source is measured at a depth of 3.6 km.

The sources are not at the fissure or above the magma tunnel, and Einar Bessi Gestsson, a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that it is most likely a release of tension in the earth's crust.

Earthquakes of this size have not been accompanied by volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula this year. The last time there was an earthquake of this magnitude was on December 18 last year, about an hour after the eruption began that day. That earthquake was located just southeast of Mt Hagafell.

It is also the third-largest earthquake since the magma tunnel, which lies under Grindavík, formed on November 10.
