Called out twice to rescue hikers
The helicopter unit of the Icelandic Coast Guard was called twice out at the request of the South Iceland police yesterday and last night. In both cases, hikers were in trouble hiking in the mountains.
Yesterday, a hiker found himself at an impasse at the mountain Strútur north of Mýrdalsjökull glacier and he was taken down from the mountain by a helicopter.
At 2 am the helicopter was requested to assist two hikers who were in trouble in the Vestrahorn Ridge near Hornafjörður. The helicopter went to the location and brought two people down from the mountain and flew them to Hornafjörður.
In neither case, there were accidents involving people, according to Þorsteinn Kristinsson, Chief Inspector at the South Iceland Police.
