The couple Óli Valur Steindórsson and Ragnheiður Þengilsdóttir had a stressful, tense, but above all, joyful moment when all things were said and done at the river Víðidalsá this morning. Þengilsdóttir put in a large salmon at the fishing area Gapastokkur in the river. Soon, the couple, who are both experienced anglers, saw that the salmon was large, and not just that, but huge.

“The marriage was up in the air for about twenty mintues. But it all went well and I think I’ll be in the grace for the next twenty years,” Steindórsson says laughingly. He then added that today he was definitely better married than his wife.

Þengilsdóttir could still feel the effects of the adrenaline when a journalist from Sporðaköst, the fly fishing section of mbl.is, spoke to her. “It was just crazy and the biggest fish I’ve ever caught. The biggest one so far was ninety centimeters in Selá river. This was crazy. Fighting to get it in for half an hour and I see this beautiful hen salmon. It was a dream and we managed to release it beautifully. Óli was on the landing net and was responsible for measuring,” said the super-happy fisherwoman. She didn’t mention the stress her husband was experiencing, but it’s also okay when things end so well.

Both were asked if the measurement was a hundred percent. Óli claimed it, and he is a man with experience who has taken two hundred percent on his hunting career. His largest one measured 107 centimeters and was caught in Selá. “He measured 102 centimeters.”

July 14 is clearly the day to catch large-scale salmon in Víðidalsá river. Just that same day last year, 101 centimetre salmon was caught in the Dalsárós are in the river. These are extremely valuable fish, and it’s the large salmon that contributes the largest and best roe.

The last few days have been good for fishing in the river after a slow start. Nine salmon were landed this morning and were caught in all areas.

Mbl.is congratulated Þengilsdóttir on the big fish and at the same time, Steindórsson on a carefree marriage for the next few decades.

This is the fourth salmon to make the plus 100 cm list this summer. It’s fewer than reported and we encourage all fishermen to keep a good record of fish measurements and measure in the middle of the tail to the top of a head. Fish stays on the side if they have water to splash. It’s a good idea to put the measuring tape on it and take a picture.
