The captain of the cargo ship Longdawn has been sentenced to 12 months' probation. The helmsman of the ship has been sentenced to 8 months' probation. They steered the ship when it collided with the coastal fishing boat Hadda.

This is the conclusion of the Reykjavik District Court, which was announced recently.

The captain also lost his sailing license for three months.

Believed he saw the boat sink but kept on going

The men are charged with danger-related offences and violations of life and body and maritime law, but both admitted the charges at the hearing before the Reykjanes District Court yesterday.

The captain of the ship noticed the collision and informed the captain that he thought the coastal fishing boat was sinking, but the captain told him, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, to continue.

Travel ban from May

The two crew members are both Russian citizens and have been undergoing a travel ban order since May due to investigations.

The coastal fishing boat Hadda capsized northwest of Garðskagi on May 16, but the research of navigational data indicated that Longdawn had hit the boat and capsized it.

The indictment accuses the captain, Eduard Dektyarev, of instructing the 2nd pilot of the ship, Alexander Vasilyev, to continue, even though the pilot informed the captain of the collision and he believed he saw the boat sinking.

The collision caused a hole in the fishing boat which capsized so the boat was half-submerged in the water. Hadda’s captain managed to get out of the sinking boat and was swimming in the water until he was rescued to another fishing vessel.

The court finds that the captain and pilot of Longdawn threatened the life of the captain of the ship Hadda with their reckless behavior.
