A Viking ship gets a new lease on life
A large Viking ship has recently been put up at Hjörleifshöfði in Mýrdalssandur. The ship is operated by the tourism company Viking Park Iceland, which aims to build up historical and cultural tourism at Hjörleifshöfði and Hafursey.
“We wanted to introduce the history of the settlement to the nation, and foreign tourists, and to draw people’s attention to a new and exciting destination. Part of that is the Viking ship,” Jóhann Vignir Hróbjartsson, the director of Viking Park Iceland, tells Morgunblaðið.
The Viking ship is named Örninn, or the Eagle, and it was originally donated by Norway to the city of Reykjavík in 1974 in celebration of the 1,100th anniversary of the Icelandic settlement.
