"We’re just a little bit of a stalemate at the moment"

No decision has been made on whether to build a road over the lava that crossed over Grindavíkurvegur Road on Saturday.

This is what Valur Guðmundsson, an expert at the Icelandic Road Administration, says to mbl.is.

“We’re just looking at the situation, this lava field is naturally thick and still moving. So we don’t have any ideas about what we can do about it, at this moment,” he says.

Could be moved further west

He also says that the employees of the Icelandic Road Administration are weighing whether the road needs to be moved.

When asked where the road would be moved, he says it’s not yet known, but there’s a possibility of moving it further west.

“We’re just a little bit of a stalemate at the moment, and we’re putting the most emphasis on these southern routes to try to keep them as good as we can.”
