It is uncertain whether the ring road through Mývatn and Möðrudalsöræfi highlands and from Höfn to Djúpivogur will open today. The Road and Coastal Administration will evaluate the situation by noon.
Sverrir Unnsteinsson, the service representative for the Icelandic Road Administration, says that the situation is being closely monitored and that roads will be opened if the opportunity arises.
Uncertainty remains even if roads are opened
The ring road through Mývatn and Möðrudalsöræfi was closed at least from 8 pm on Monday and has not been opened since. Unnsteinsson says the weather forecast for the area is not particularly good but says the situation will be re-evaluated by noon.
The ring road from Höfn to Djúpivogur was closed on Monday night and hasn't been opened since. Unnsteinsson says there is a possibility that the weather will go down later today, allowing the road to be opened.
“It’s still uncertain and we’ll just have to see how the winds will blow.”
However, he says that even if the roads are opened later today, it does not mean they will not be closed again, since there is an orange weather alert in the area until tomorrow morning when the alert level goes down to yellow. All in all, it looks like there will be bad weather until Friday.
