Feel safe in the Blue Lagoon
The eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row does not seem to stop tourists from visiting the Blue Lagoon. When mbl.is journalists arrived around noon yesterday, there were a few tourists in the area.
Journalists met Krasi and Airam from Colorado outside the Blue Lagoon. They arrived in Iceland on Saturday with their children Andres and Sofia.
The couple says they were hoping to visit the lagoon. They feel safe within the defense walls that surround the lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon reopened on Sunday, but was closed on May 29 due to the volcanic eruption.
They thought the eruption was fireworks
When asked if they saw the eruption on the way to the Blue Lagoon, the couple says that at first, they thought it was fireworks. Then they realized it was a volcanic eruption.
“The only thing we had read about was that the volcano had stopped erupting, but then it has started again,” says Krasi.
He says it’s very exciting to be so close to the eruption and that Icelandic nature is different from everything they have seen. His wife Airam adds:
“It’s so amazing and much more than I expected. It’s so beautiful.”
Dream destination
When asked if they feel safe in the area, they say they read about safety measures, such as the defense walls. This gives them a certain feeling of safety.
“We’re as safe as you are, aren’t we?” asks Krasi.
The couple says that the Blue Lagoon has been a dream destination for their family for a long time and they feel incredibly lucky to have been able to visit the lagoon.
“We’ve only been here four days, so we were hoping it would be open,” says Krasi.
