A volcanic eruption has started again on the Reykjanes peninsula. It appears that a volcanic eruption has erupted northeast of Mt Sýlingarfell.

The eruption is the eighth on the peninsula in over three years and the fifth to erupt in just over six months, since the first eruption in the Svartsengi system on December 18.

Flight code red for now

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police has decided in consultation with the Commissioner of the Police in Suðurnes to move to the emergency phase due to the volcanic eruption.

The flight color code has been changed to red until more details about ash distribution are available.

A helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard will be launched shortly to confirm the exact location and size of the eruption.

Update:

Flight red code is no longer in effect. As it has been with previous eruptions in Reykjanes, this eruption does not affect air traffic.
